Films I've just watched 2017

Over successive nights:

Dredd Brilliant, just brilliant. Cult classic, shame they shot themselves in the foot with the cinema release.

The Raid A few sticking points early on - no grenades for example - but nevertheless a delicious watch with some great fight scenes, although the plot is nothing too major.

The Assault Another brilliant film, French with subtitles, but worth the watch.

Finally got round to seeing The Expendables 2.

All the early scenes with dialogue between the characters had me cringing a bit. But then it really picked up the pace and started to have fun. My main complaint is the lack of screentime for Van Damme, who made a great bad guy and who isn't in nearly enough good movies nowadays.

Also picked up the will to watch Resident Evil: Retribution. So long as you go into this movie knowing that it's a huge steaming pile of wank with absolutely no regard for taking things seriously, it's fun. This series is a guilty pleasure really, seeing as the first one was actually pretty decent and they've steadily been getting more ludicrous with each release. They're just a laugh really.

Also Dredd. Watched it once with a few of the PW crew over Skype and a second time just to catch more of the dialogue without Wolfy and Boomy's rambling. Holy hell this film is simply amazing. I'm not particularly familiar at all with the Dredd comics, but I absolutely love how the franchise was presented in this. I really wish it hadn't been practically a none showing at our local cinema though, because I'd have loved to hear the sound effects and music from the big screen.

Blitz
The Jason Stathamiest Jason Statham film I've ever seen. Everyone is an alcoholic cockney coppah. It's rubbish really but hilarious, especially the first 45 minutes.

Its fairly toned down. I dont remember seeing any blood actually. Lots of shooting and people falling over but a definite lack of blood. Even when someone gets beaten up they kind of get grazes rather than cuts.

Unusually for these types of films I thought the sequel was better than the original, and not just because of VD and more Arnie and Bruce.

In Bruges: been meaning to watch this for years. "You're an inanimate facking object!" may be one of the best delivered lines in any film I've seen in years. Very grim. Very amusing.

Watched Looper last night. It started off really well with an interesting plot and great interactions between Levitt and Willis. But then someone decided it'd be better if they threw in the script for a totally different movie with some super psychic child. I really would have preferred another hour or so of cat and mouse between young Joe and old Joe, whilst exploring the idea of old Joe dealing with his memories being increasingly jumbled as the younger Joe does things to change his own future.

Instead, pretty much from the point he arrived on that farm until the end of the movie was a real disappointment. Gutted at the missed opportunity.

Aye, I kind of felt the same. It was going great until the hit the farm. I did love the sequence of Young Joe becoming Old Joe over time.
