So, that was my Captain America weekend.

Was quite surprised to find that I didn't like either as much as I thought I did. They both have their plus points. The first being a fun throwback to pulpy action comics. And the second with it's tough surveillance thriller vibes.
And yet, for all they had going for them, found myself coming away bored by them. Call it superhero saturation or just the films themselves not doing much to be engaging. But another movie that tries to thrill you with dangers, yet you know the impeccable hero will walk away without a scratch.

Heh. Finally get the criticism that Captain America is a bit one-note in the films.

The Equalizer

Denzel Washington takes on the Russian mob and also works in a hardware store.

The remake of the 80's TV show or as I like to call it, a 2 hour plus waste of fucking time. Dull dull film with very little going for it. If it had been a straight to DVD film it would have been forgiveable but this was a big budget film with some half decent actors in it. Very little imagination or effort went into the story and it ends up being predictable and tiresome. No doubt it will get a sequel.

The plot was hole ridden but I like the John Wick kind of hero doing badass stuff. It wasn't a waste of my time, put it that way.
(Unlike Arrival which I thought was pretentious after starting off quite well)

To each their own I guess mate. I love me some John Wick style lone badass as well, but after John Wick the bar is very high.

Yeah I know what you mean about Arrival, liked it at first then thinking about it later it was a bit iffy.

I don't do myself any favours by watching cinema-sins videos straight after watching a film :)

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Properly creepy horror film, thoroughly enjoyed this one. Barring one meh bit of exposition a really cracking watch, recommended.

Might as well chime in on Arrival as well.

Won't surprise anyone to find that I really enjoyed it. Is it as clever as it thinks it is? No.
But sometimes a mood piece that looks great and means well is enough to keep me happy. :)

Also, old Denis Villeneuve reusing some of his old tricks. Anyone who has seen Enemy knew what was going to happen in the dream sequence. ;)

Fire Storm: Casper Van Dien

You know those times when you slap on a film not sure what to expect and what you are greeted with is a movie that takes itself so seriously but is in fact so bad that it puts you in complete hysterics from start to finish? Well much like when a friend and I went to watch The Last Castle and spent the entire film in giggle fits while everyone else took it deadly serious Firestorm had all of us watching with tears in our eyes laughing constantly as the movie unfolded. So bad its good perfectly sums it up, for the very first watch at least.

That was excellent! There was some contrivances (lowest security top secret project ever!) and they played to the R rating too much early on with having Pat say fuck about 8 times which felt off but minor niggles. Might be the best super hero film, certainly the best in many years.

Felt like a Western with comic book characters in it though they fitted in decent chase sequences as well as the fights, only a couple of too-slow moments, missed the very start but the rest of it eventually delivered although it helped if you hadn't watched any trailers for it though as always with modern flicks.
