Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Postby katarn » Thu Apr 14, 2011 9:57 am

Another reboot it seems. Being released in August.
An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

 Because Planet of the Apes really needed an origins story. Sweet baby Jesus and the orphans.

"Only thing I can't work out is, how did those damned dirty apes get so smart in the first place?"

Stupid trailer shots and title aside, this actually has the potentional to be quite good if it's more of a slow burner for the first couple of acts.

That said, we know it'll be the standard 'Act 1: Apes get smart' 'Act 2 action sequences galore' 'Act 3 final showdown/escape' that seems to prevail in Hollywood.

er.........wasn't all of this explained in Escape. There was a plague that killed off all the cats and dogs and humans trained apes as pets and experimented on their brains to make intelligent.

The original POTA is still the best of the series. A true classic. I love that film. I recall seeing it for the 1st time when I was 13 and did not know the ending and when it happened I was actually stunned and couldn't think about anything else that day.

Beneath had a good concept but the minute they introduced the psychic humans it became silly and dull....

Beneath had a lot of really interesting ideas, it's just it had the weight of its classic predecessor on its shoulders. Plus it was a bit sloppily made at times compared to POTA.

I think it's pretty good though, a worthy sequel.

Think it looks quite good. Franco and Cox, with that black guy that was in some good stuff, and most importantly: GORRILLAS GONE WIIIIILD!

I think it's a combination Escape/Conquest remake.

But monkeys with pointy sticks vs humans with assault rifles does look a bit iffy :)

There was a trailer for this playing on the front of X-Men. Not the trailer above, I don't know if it was newer or older.

I didn't realise it was ROTA until the title card at the end.
It looked like a shitty B-movie.
S'not on my list.

Looks shit. I am disappointed in James Franco, I thought he'd grown out of making shitty movies, I was clearly wrong.

I hate Hollywood sometimes. Just what is the point of this film? And shitty CGI everywhere.

Not when his day job is the soap General Hospital...mind you he did 127 Hours, so it's more "hit and miss" at the moment, and no-one had any control over Spider Man 3 going to shite except the producers at Sony.

I found an old documentary about the Apes series and "Rise" looks like an excuse to re-issue whatever box set is already out there. I gave Tim Burton's remake a chance, but meh I'll pass on "Rise" unless I end up with a freebie ticket offer or something. It looks as pointless a remake as Footloose.

Nah, it's a about gorillas taking over the planet, some things just can't be all that bad.
