Everything I know about The Hobbit comes from the Leonard Nemoy song about Bilbo Baggins. Is Mr Spock accurate?

He is, but he's only mentioned, he doesn't enter the story at all save as an excuse for Gandalf to leave partway through, and as a vague "the wood was much nicer before the darkness came".

Yeah, but he's only known as the Necromancer, and plays no role in the book at all, really. Just an explanation as to why the forest is shit.

Didn't realise there was much material available between the end The Hobbit and LotR? Is there a fair bit of stuff in the histories that his son did or is Pete Jackson just going add to the available writings?
