Star Trek has always been known for tackling issues of identity in a way that inspires hope for the present-day audience. The original series had a black woman as a senior officer just 4 years after MLK's "I have a dream" speech, and a Russian officer during the height of the cold war. With gender and gender fluidity being a pretty divisive issue at the moment, I think giving a female character a traditionally male name was a nice touch, given that it's set some 230 years in the future when hopefully we won't feel the need to have such conversations, whether that was the production team's intention or not.

I actually re-watched the first two episodes and I think I liked it more the second time around having had time to reflect on the characters' motivations. I think Burnham's decision to mutiny showed an interesting conflict between her human self and her vulcan education and logic. Georgiou's decision to kill T'Kuvma with a suicide bombing was a desperate attempt at avoiding all out war.

I'm not sure calling a woman by a man's name is really pushing any identity envelopes. Seriously. It's just daft :)

If they wanted to do something like that then breaking the human captain chain with an alien might have been a thing maybe.

Cast Peter Dinklage as the new captain if they want to be interesting, have his characters named Susan to be extra edgy.

Unless he's got 3 arses and 6 of them are mouths and a tail and turquoise blood. I'm not buying it.

Yet another Netflix job which is a satire on the documentary type thing (like Making a Murderer) about finding out who drew 27 dicks, on 27 cars.
It is fantastic, I have not laughed so hard for ages.

I take it you mean it sends up stuff like Making a Murderer?

Bojack Horseman is one of the best things on Netflix and everyone should give it a watch.

I think it has the same format of Making a Murderer. It is very funny and is played out in a dead serious way.

As did I. I'm up to the 3rd episode now.

I think the budget available to Netflix is doin the series more than some justice. Its far more polished than your typical older series, the acting and the characters are a lot more crisp and professional. The writing is definitely improved and its opening itself up with a lot more confidence much more quickly than other series in the franchise.

Quietly impressed up to now even with the man-name thing aside :D

Loved how Chris Barrie cracks a little in episode 1 when he said "He was in Berlin, you goit! .. in a bunker!"

Just finished this, genuinely funny and very well made. I lost it while Dylan is explaining what "Baby Farting" was to the school board, the outtakes of this series must be hilarious.

Highly recommended

Oops, accidentally posted this in the films thread initially.

This past week we've been watching Mindhunters on Netflix.

Gripping telly. First episode takes a while to get going, but quickly it becomes compelling. It's a dramatisation of the work done by two FBI agents in the early 70s to define what serial killers are, which they do by touring the country interviewing real-life examples. In particular, the actors playing the killers do a fantastic job.

The names have been changed, but a lot of what takes place is true to life. One of the agents was the inspiration for Jack Crawford, the agent from Silence of the Lambs who acts as a mentor to Clarice Starling. The other agent was the one who first coined the phrase serial killer.

Give it a watch, and bear with it through the slow opening half hour or so.
My face is tired.
