I don't really know much about it, where does it fit in in terms of the Trek timeline?

After Enterprise series but before the Original.

If that even means anything. Might watch one tonight in bed but damn I have to be up early doors.

It's set in 2256; the first episode of TOS was set in 2265. According to Memory Alpha (the canon Star Trek wiki), the original Enterprise has actually been launched by this point, though it's not captained by Kirk yet.

One thing I did like was little sound effects from the original series, as it's a subtle reminder of when it's set. But then they do silly tech stuff like having conversations with holograms walking around them, when even distant in the future in Voyager they're still chatting over screens. There's a difference between being slavish to the technological limitations shown by shows decades ago and having internal consistency.

I liked the use of TOS sound effects, but the problem is they started using them from TNG (and apparently DS9 though I didn't notice them) too; there's a very obvious use of TNG's "channel open" sound. The holographic communications thing was actually tried on DS9 because they wanted more dramatic looking conversations rather than people just appearing on a screen. It was dropped after two episodes because it simply didn't add anything.

And yeah, the lack of continuity in design choices can only be pushed so far before you need to wonder why they're bothering to use the license in the first place. I'm sure designers and show runners want to avoid using someone else's work, to make their own mark on the series, but sadly it just makes it look like they're wilfully ignoring established design. I think the problem is that there was nothing in those first two episodes that wouldn't have made sense had they set it after Voyager and not used the Klingons as adversaries, so why did they set it when they did? Hopefully that'll become a little more clear as the series goes on.

As someone who doesn't have any real interest in Star Trek it was ok, I'll keep watching it anyway.

Started Bojack Horseman, must say I am enjoying it way more than I thought I would. Also I love that opening theme music. Found a full lenght version :D

The new Star Trek.

Very lens flare much bloom!

Aye fair enough the look is modern enough and it's fairly clear they've spent a few quid on the graphical side.

The protagonist in the form of Burnham is ok I guess. Time will tell with these things. The rest of the crew didn't get much of an airing aside from the Captain and the weak willed science guy.

Interesting enough in general to make me want to keep watching though. The new look Klingon isn't awful I guess, just a bit different. Their motivations will need to be fleshed out and I'm sure they will be in coming episodes.

Is alright I suppose as a starter to the series.

American Vandal.

Yet another Netflix job which is a satire on the documentary type thing (like Making a Murderer) about finding out who drew 27 dicks, on 27 cars.
It is fantastic, I have not laughed so hard for ages.

Watched the start and now in the second episode.

Seems ok. Why did they call the female lead Michael?

I looked that up and apparently the show creator just likes giving female leads mens names. So yeah... :?
