We went to see the 50th anniversary screening of the Yellow Submarine today at the GFT. It was magic.

Took the kids, nearly drowned in nostalgia and even got a nice little bundle of bumpf for my troubles. Smashin'! :D

:o

Grew up watching that film, seen it more times than I can remember. Trying to judge when the best time is to show it to my two (youngest is 5, think she may still be a bit little for the more surreal parts).

Wife got me this for my birthday last year, and I loved it:

Although I'm guessing the only difference is that I'm a massive weirdo and haven't opened it.

Yeah, built mine and it's sitting pride of place on the shelf over my desk now. Really nice set.

Red Sparrow

A grim look at the exploitation of women (and men, to a lesser extent) in modern day Russian espionage. It's harrowing pretty much from start to finish, yet everything about the film is flat, particularly the performances. I think it's intentional, showing how everyone in that world becomes deadened to the horrors around them, and it works to some extent. The plot has so many twists and turns that faction loyalties are blurred beyond recognition (again, intentional), which does demonstrate effectively one of the core ideas of the film: that people ultimately act in favour of the thing they want most.

I struggle to recommend this, not because it's bad - at times it is very strong - but because it's not quite good enough to make the enduring misery worthwhile.

7/10

PS - It appears it was still a more enjoyable alternative to the England match, though.

The Hateful Eight

I don't really know what to say about it. It was beautifully filmed and edited, well acted, and made me think a lot. That's a really good thing. So, I definitely enjoyed it. But it was also pretty horrible.

The First Purge
It has some good ideas but plays far too safe with them. It dabbles in nasty for a hot minute but quickly becomes a consequenceless (don’t think that’s a word) action movie.

Hereditary (rewatch)
I had a lot of problems with it but I also really loved a lot of it. I figured I’d give it another go. Still have the same problems! I think you could edit it into a really great film but as is it’s too baggy. If it was more like the Witch in show don’t tell it could have been quite spectacular but as is, it’s just middling. At its best it has some of the best horror scenes in years but as a whole A Quiet Place is much better.

Django Unchained

That was fun. I enjoyed it more than The Hateful Eight. Tarantino's attention to detail and artistic flair is impressive.

Skyscraper aka Rockhard

It’s not good. Typical soulless by the numbers action. The fact it has a couple of callbacks to Diehard (not 100% sure they were intentional) hurt it even more. It doesn’t understand that dynamics are important and that in Die Hard there is probably 80% of it that’s quiet, talking, character building. This builds character by a throw away back story, a uhm... trait of the Rock that has no bearing on anything and one things start exploding it never stops because it thinks that’s what makes a good action film. EXPLODE MORE STUFF!!!

It’s boring.

Also, the rock is weirdly unconvincing doing fight scenes. They’re awkward and slow.

I need to go watch the good Die Hards as a palette cleanser. That’s 1&2 by the way ;)
