Sochi Olympics and Paralympics

Postby Achtung Englander » Fri Feb 14, 2014 9:23 am

Is anyone watching this ?

This is the most expensive Olympics held and it is like in the background with little to zero interest from anyone I know. I am not following it.

Kind of a waste of $50B to watch a European or American or Canadian go down a mountain. Imagine if they spent that on the impoverished in Russia

I watched a bit yesterday. Some women in lycra went in circles for a few seconds then fell over. :|

I have no interest. At all.

I respect the dedication of the athletes and all that bollocks, but I have a hard enough time being bothered with the Summer Olympics.

$50 billion is a disgusting amount of money to spend.

I've watched a fair bit. The Snowboarding and Slopestyle skiing have been good.

The skeleton... you can tell me for hours how it really is an impressive feat of balance and core strength, but to me it's still just the inevitability of gravity mixed with a fair level of insanity. I can get on board with curling, but it's still not particularly exciting.

Since my youngest has been training in figure skating quite a bit in the last three plus years, yes we're watching lots of Olympics now. Not to mention that the family is from Russia and they used to holiday in Sochi almost every summer back in Soviet times. I'm the only person I know that understood the opening ceremonies, which were amazing by the way. To hell with the political stuff and "oh it's a waste of $$ that could have been spent on X" as well - every damned country on the planet allows it's poor and homeless to suffer, and 50bil wouldn't hardly help at all in the end (Homelessness is a very complex issue, that I deal with on a daily basis; throwing a bit of money at it is not the answer. We can make a new topic if that's up for debate.). Part of the idea, as well, is to revive Sochi and the mountain resorts area so that Russia's billionaires will want to holiday there instead of flying off to Italy & Paris.

My little girl, Sofia, is quite good at skating btw - she's consistently landing axels now and is going for her double jumps. She's ten years old :)

Maybe it's because it's after London's summer Olympics, it felt like there was a lot more interest for Vancouver 2010 or maybe it was the time difference. We have the one Gold that you could call expected, any other UK medal will be a welcome surprise, but the player on BBC Sport will show you whichever individual sport you want and shouldn't require you to change channels all over the place.

Watched the USA v Russia ice hockey game earlier, cracking game. The Russians wouldn't have liked getting beat, even though it technically doesn't mean that much at this stage. I can see them giving the US a good smacking when they meet later on in the tournament.

Loved watching the Women's Boardercross yesterday - Cracking racing. Was looking forward to the men's today but the whole place is fogged out :(

Also, yes, there are quite a few lovely women. The Russian women's Curling team appears to be made entirely of supermodels.
IMO :P  :P  :P

Visit Russia. Half the place is supermodels :)

Here's me at a jazz club in Naberezhnyye Chelny, Tatarstan. That's my mother-in-law on the far left, btw, she's got a thing for wigs, or at least she did.
