The MMA News Thread

Postby Tichinde » Mon Jan 14, 2013 7:36 pm

I know only me (not Me) and Sig ever post in this thread but I like it :P
(If anyone else wants in, feel free :) )

So, discussion of MMA news, events, results, predictions and gibberish.

Strikeforce went out with a bit of a bang, but mostly a whimper.
Lowlight:
Good strong performances from the 2 heavyweight fights on the card against 2 retardedly out-classed opponents.
Highlight:
Jacare proving her can hang with UFC level fighters.

And this Saturday night (19th) is UFC: Belfort vs Bisping.....in Brazil.
Interesting one with title implications for Bisping. bisping should be able to win it so long as Vitor doesn't smash him in the face in the first 2 minutes
Couple of good fights there too, want to see how Rothwell looks after his last outing.

Main Card
Belfort vs Bisping
Sarafian vs Dollaway -
Gonzaga vs Rothwell
Tavares vs Nurmagomedov

Prelims
Castro vs Vieira
Markes vs Craig
Nunes vs Lentz
Barboza vs Martins
Trinaldo vs Keith

Missed the prelims unfortunately. Manged to stay awake for the main card, for the majority, and it was alright. Bisping went down like a brick. I'm not sure he's got it in him to be a champ. He's got excellent foot work and his striking and jabs are very accurate, but whenever it comes to stepping up and having to fight someone who has done it before and a huge step up in class, he just gets battered. I don't think you really could expect Bisping to have won this, Belfort looked twice as big as he did and it really showed in that match.

Apart from that the fights were ok. The first one (i think) was pretty good, but the ref messed it up. 12 unanswered elbows to the head is extremely dangerous. I understood thew first 5 or so shots being let off because it looked like he was going to sweep him whilst grabbing his leg, but after that there was 7 or 8 that you could just clearly see that he wasn't defending himself and he was on the way out. Dan should have stopped it along tme before he did, and it didn't help that he messed up on of the prelims by saying it was shots to the back of the head when it was to the side. I'm not sure what Dana can do about it though.

Anyway, another fight this weekend should be good hopefully :)

Also, UFC back in the UK! Yay! A good headliner fight too. Not going, though, way too expensive and travel kills me. Hopefully they'll do Manchester or Liverpool soon so I can go without having to stay over night.

So, the Korean Zombie is wanting a title shot when he comes back mid year. Think he deserves it? Three in a row, but I'm not sure he's there yet. Needs a number 1 contenders fight, and if he comes through that, let him have a go. He sure has a hell of a lot of skill, though. Loved that Twister.

I'd say Cub Swanson is more deserving. He's 3 in a row and I'd say he's beaten better.

Still, tonight has to happen first, quite quite excited about most of the card.

Nice to see Bader back, but I suspect he'll kill Matyushenko.
Guida at feather is interesting.
Cowboy and Pettis should be blinding. Huge opportunity for Pettis who I feel hasn't lived up to the hype surrounding him.
The last UFC of Rampage, I hope Texeira uses him to springboard up those rankings :)
And we'll end the night with 25 minutes of dancing. :(

I think Dodson will go for it. Might Mouse is pretty boring fighter imo, brilliant, but his style is just not what people want.

Pettis won :D Cerrone looked absolute garbage.

The flys delivered for me there.
Dodson looked great but MM just outworked him, and those knees!!!!
Good night that one.

So roll on next week for Aldo vs Edgar....good card that one too (but it always is on Super Bowl weekend).

Totally forgot about TUF too, the openers were supposedly amazing.

Oh my word. Refereeing is going to ruin this sport unless they do something about it.

So London this weekend (huzzah for a sensible time to watch fighting!)

Couple of good looking fights on the card but looks typical for a UK show.

Bantamweight Renan Barão (ic) vs. Michael McDonald
Featherweight Cub Swanson vs. Dustin Poirier
Light Heavyweight Jimi Manuwa vs. Cyrille Diabaté
Welterweight Gunnar Nelson vs. Jorge Santiago
Light Heavyweight James Te-Huna vs. Ryan Jimmo
Welterweight Che Mills vs. Matthew Riddle

Preliminary Card (Facebook)
Lightweight Terry Etim vs. Renee Forte
Lightweight Paul Sass vs. Danny Castillo
Featherweight Andy Ogle vs. Josh Grispi
Middleweight Tom Watson vs. Stanislav Nedkov
Bantamweight Vaughan Lee vs. Motonobu Tezuka
Flyweight Phil Harris vs. Ulysses Gomez

Bigger news (literally) is Velasquez vs. Bigfoot II has been signed for May at 160. Foregone conclusion on that one???
We said the same thing about Silva/Overoids.... :)
Also on that card is Overoids and JDS, which makes me happy, but makes me very nervous.....

If you're not watching the Prelims, you've missed some really good fights. Can''t believe Watson's not on the main card. Watson getting battered after looking so good for the first 3/4 of the first round.

Holy shit this Watson fight!!!

Missed the Watson fight, wanted to see that too :(

The card overall was rubbish though. Very lackluster and dull.
Poirier Swanson and Barao McDonald were the only saving graces.

Big questions answered this weekend.
Can Womens MMA keep old school UFC fans watching...

Personally, don't care, all this history making bullshit is boring me now :)
Still going Round 1 armbar win for Rousey though ¬¬

Rest of the card is pretty bare with Machida/Hendo and Shaub/Johnson being my want to watch fights.

Main Card

Rousey vs Carmouche

Machida vs Henderson

Faber vs Menjivar

McGee vs Neer

Koscheck vs Lawler
Prelims

Schaub vs Johnson

Chiesa vs Kuivanen

Bermudez vs Grice

Stout vs Fodor

Robertson vs Jardine

Manley vs Magny

Burrell vs Villefort

It's a shame no one sees Liz winning. Just shows how good Ronda is, but it'll end up being a VERY boring division if all we see is Ronda winning time and time again because no one can even get close to her. Cyborg has the best chance, but with her saying she'll die if she drops 15 pounds I don't think that'll happen anytime. The UFC need to find someone who can at least challenge Ronda.

1st round armbar.

I've got Machida down for a TKO. Not likely to happen, but I get a feeling he'll pull it off.

Only other fight i'm interested in is the Faber fight. One of my favourite fighters next to the Korean Zombie so I'm hoping he gets a win. I think he risks being dropped if he doesn't show up here.

Sigh. I have a friend watching this asking "why do they hug each other so much?" Showed him Kong fight and he instantly changed his mind about why they do it and how shit it looks.
