Not necessarily. It would have been closer, but I'm not convinced he had the pace to pass and win.

There would have been a scrap at the end at minimum - Hamilton got within 5 seconds, and his penalty was 5 seconds.

Don't forget he also stayed out longer because of the five second penalty so spent more time on worn tyres. Without the five second penalty he could have won. Not sure what happened to Bottas, he just fell away, but then he used to do the same at Williams after good qualifying so it's not usually I guess.

I think Lewis has always been occasionally prone to sudden inexplicable errors of judgement; it's something he's never been able to fully rid himself of completely.

I personally think he's still the best pure racer out there regardless, and I'd take him over Vettel any day of the week, but there's always been a yin/yang thing going on.

So it turns out that Bottas' crew had a broken generator on the grid so his rear tyres were over-inflated leading to high tyre degradation and poor handling. It doesn't really explain his poor pace after the pit stop though.

Yeah, it's always nice for someone to get their first win, it's just a shame that it was one of the most boring races I've ever watched. Get rid of Sochi, it's as bad as Valencia, possibly worse because we're forced to watch Putin every time we go there.

Alonso had to retire from the Indy 500 due to engine trouble, oh the irony. Hecan change sport, but he can't escape the terrible Honda engine.

We watched the latter 130 or so laps after finding a YouTube stream. We tuned in for Alonso, but I really didn't expect to be cheering for Max Chilton and Takuma Sato. It was far more exciting than the F1 race, but a lot of that was probably novelty.

McLaren Honda had three drivers competing across two sports, none of them managed to finish a race.

Aye, thankfully for Honda, Takuma Sato won it with a Honda engine. Otherwise they really would've been in the shit.

Great race by Alonso though, no doubt he can win it and no doubt McLaren will feel the pressure to retain him.

That Scott Dixon crash though...

Indy has insane crashes almost every year, it's probably how they pull in 300,000 spectators.

In another discussion of the big Indy crash, I was linked to one from Nascar where people were clearly cheering while the colossal wreck was still happening (it looked like it involved 10-15 cars, and there were flames). I know safety standards in motor racing are impressive, but serious injuries and deaths do still happen, and I found it incredible that the crowd were celebrating what could have been one.

There was a bad one not long ago involving Aric Arimola (sp?) where they caught a picture of him on the stretcher board wincing and some paper used that as the headline pic. Not cool.

Ps. Nascar fans are mental.
