Le Mans 24 Hours

Postby Rossell » Sat Jun 16, 2012 6:25 pm

Just watching some live feeds of this. Within the last two hours we've lost both a Toyota and Audi due to two spectacular fails. The Audis crash resulted with its driver very angrily ripping bodywork off the front. The Toyota on the other hand slowed down from nearly 200mph only to clip a car and roll over.

What you guys reckon?

No. A Toyota LMP1 car got a bit emotional and ran it off track. Bastard.

Wow, that was a biggie. Lucky the car righted itself before hitting the tyre wall.

Anthony Davidson broke his back in that crash apparently.

Yes. Endurance races aren't that exciting anyway, but Le Mans is even more predictable than WRC or F1 in the Schumacher/Ferrari days.

Why would you say that, have you actually watched any?

I went to the six hour endurance race at Silverstone last year (as did sixty thousand others). The Audi’s and Peugeot’s went toe to toe for the whole race and it was only in the final thirty minutes that the winning Peugeot was able to pull away; even then he never had that much of a lead. Audi may have won Le Mans way too much recently but Peugeot pushed them very hard in recent years. Peugeot even won the championship last year.

You then have the other classes of cars and the difference in speed that provides action for the whole race. The other classes went to the line before a winner was decided.

This years Le Mans was not the norm due to Peugeot pulling out at the end of last year due to finances. Toyota came in at the last minutes and considering that, did a great job.

Yep properly upsetting. Even worse was the fact that this morning another Aston crashed in a similar way and the driver of that car was quite emotional as you'd expect.

Toyota have just had one of their cars in the wall. 45 minutes to go.

Has anyone seen the actual crash? The vids on Youtube seem to show an on-board from the car behind showing him losing control and then it switches to a long shot of the damaged car, but nothing in-between.

It didn't actually look that "bad", but I guess something must have failed on the car for such injuries to occur.

Personally I try to avoid fatal crashes no matter how minor the crash may look. If I catch it live thats just one of those things, but I refused to look when I discovered the result.

Edit: To this day I've never seen Dan Wheldon or Marco Simoncellis deaths.

I think I've mentioned elsewhere but I've seen 4 motorcyclists killed racing whilst watching live. I've never watched a replay of any of them and I was horrified each time. I never want to see another.
