I had every intention of buying this but then promptly forgot.
I have now rectified that and will be reading it soon x

I just remembered that I stuck a review on Goodreads for this but never copied it over to Amazon. Will do that now for what good it may be worth.

I was wondering though, what sort of readership figures have you managed to hit so far, any life changing numbers? Was it worth using the Kindle Unlimited option in the end?

Life-changing? No. But for a first effort at a self-published novel I've been quite pleased, and I beat my targets both for sales and pages read (the latter being how KU works out how much to pay you).

Between unit sales and equivalent number of copies read through KU (ie KU says my book is 1111 standardised pages long, so I divide the total pages read by 1111 to work out equivalent copies read) I'm looking at a shade below 2,000 copies since coming out in April last year.

I also ran a 5-day free promotion before Christmas and got around 2,500 downloads. I was doing it mainly to try to get more reviews coming in (once you hit 20 you start appearing in more search results, more than 50 and you start appearing in Amazon newsletters and the like), but have been a bit disappointed in that regard.

Nice. Even if it doesn't bring you untold riches it must still be quite satisfying knowing that a fair few people have read something you worked so hard to produce.

Are you sticking with Amazon in future then or considering approaching publishers?

I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing for this trilogy, I've already learned a lot just having written one and think the second one will be better, so in a way it's a bit of a learning experience. I've got a bunch of ideas for other books after this, so think I might try approaching agents with those and see what happens. Slightly crazy to think that's at least two years off and probably a bit longer

I think its easier to tempt an Agent/Publisher if you have more than one book written. See how you feel once the second is done. Possibly sketch out a loose plot for book 3 then approach agents. You then have proof that you can write more than one book.

I'd have thought it would be better to wait until starting on a new series altogether before approaching a publisher. I can't see them being particularly favourable over a trilogy where two of the books had already been published on Amazon, lost potential sales and all that.

Pretty much my rationale as well, Mantis. The future books I have planned I'm going to keep a bit shorter as well, maybe half the wordcount each of these trilogy novels is coming in at (125k words versus 250k), which hopefully means being able to get them out a bit quicker. I may even do one between books 2 and 3 for a bit of a change of scene, not decided yet.

I'm about 90% through so far and I'm definitely invested in the characters :)
I'll slow down now so that you can finsih the second book and I can carry straight on to the next..

You could always re-read it! :)

It'll be a while, I think. First draft - hopefully - finished sometime in March, then a couple of full edits (I did three drafts for the first one, so anticipating the same here)... earliest it will be out will be June I expect.

And I've finished. <twiddles thumbs, waiting>

I'll have to continue with rereading a Peter F Hamilton book.

That reminds me, you need a middle initial to sound suave.
