Yes writing is a tough gig.
My mate who I linked earlier in this thread has been writing for years, with 3 books published through Salt publishing (Scarecrow, Broken Arrow and Werewolf), and he is still poor as a church mouse that has fallen on particularly hard times despite a publisher and an agent. Weirdly the most money he has got has been for the German translation rights to Scarecrow, his first novel, for which he got £20k (before agent and publishers fees). That was years ago though and he has had nothing like that since.
He initially focused on crime writing due to it being the most lucrative fiction, as well as being able to draw on his experience working as a journalist in Almeria for his protagonist. He is writing a new book presently, having dropped Salt as a publisher, and this one will be a fantasy title. From early test readings, it is looking very good, but there is so much luck in getting noticed as a writer.
Keep at it
