I've now heard the version of Dark Matters without narration. Sublime. Better than Z1 I reckon.

Does it still have vocals for the songs, or is it completely instrumental?

Still has vocals, just none of the character dialogue. The problem with the standard Dark Matters disc is that there are a lot of sections where there is music and dialogue over one another that made it sound a bit messy whilst the original Ziltoid album tended to just put breaks into tracks for the speech. Removing the dialogue actually lets you hear how well the songs stand up on their own.

It's nice to listen to the album with all the story and silly narration included the first few times, but after that you're really going to want to just rock out to the songs as they are.

Ed: Also, the version of Fallout with Anneke on vocals is so bad compared to Devin's version. God knows what he was thinking swapping that over for the final mix. The rest of Sky Blue is glorious though. A stronger record than Epicloud.

Finally pre-ordered off of Amazon. I have acquired it until it arrives via other means. Listening to Sky Blue first.

It's amazing how much so many of the tracks on Sky Blue give off vibes of his past albums. Listening to the high quality final mix you can really hear bits of Ocean Machine, Accelerated Evolution, Synchestra, Addicted and Ghost. Rain City through to the end in particular is just crammed with that atmosphere.

I'm quickly coming around to the idea that this might be his finest album ever.

Yeah, I've been getting some past vibes from other records coming through.

*Edit: I think on first impressions that the album's strengths are definitely in the first half. The title track didn't really do anything for me and the ones that followed didn't grasp me as much as the others. I do get this alot with albums, though, so I'll wait until my pre-order arrives and then give it a few more listens.

On to Z2 now, I see what you guys mean about heavy use of narration. Still enjoying it, but I reckon disc 3 will be my favoured listen.

What I like about the title track is that it sort of reminds me of Save Our Now off Epicloud, only more melancholy, which perfectly sums up the entire feel of this album. Tempered happiness.

It's funny that you say that as Save Our Now was a track that took a good while to grow on me; it's still far from a favourite off of Epicloud, but I don't mind letting it play through. Sky Blue as a track just isn't really working for me: I think it's that synthy thing in the background in the chorus, something about it just grates on me, ruining the song.

The rest of the album is starting to gel a bit more now (I couldn't help but listen to it again). I think Warrior might be my favourite from Sky Blue, I just love that chorus!

Funny, because that synthy bit is exactly why I like it so much. :P

For anyone who wants to hear the older mix of Fallout in a higher quality rip.

I'm not so sure anymore which I prefer. Devin's is the better track, but Anne's fits the mood of the album better.

Got my copy in the mail today. Nice packaging.

Big question: How do I tag this for my FLAC collection? Are both albums considered DTP, or do I put Dark Matters as Ziltoid or Devin Townsend?
I should be enjoying the music, but my OCD is going daft over this.

You'd have a hairy fit if you seen all my Devin albums are just under Devin Townsend except SYL.

Do you have a separate artist entry for Ocean Machine? ;)

Luckily I've got a later version of the album with his name up front and centre.

Edit:

Devin Townsend Project - Sky Blue
Devin Townsend - Dark Matters
Devin Townsend - Dark Matters - Raw

That should work, unless I hear otherwise.
