Should probably go in the gig thread, but fuck it.
Saw Devin play a solo acoustic set last night at All Saints church in Brighton.
That pretty much sums it up. He did a mix of spoken word and songs from his back catalogue, plus a song about a dog that he made up on the spot. His observations were typically Devin, introspective, thoughtful and often extremely funny. He made a joke about people making requests, shouting out Strapping songs with him replying "Guys it is an acoustic
gig...". He then proceeded to start playing a very muted tune that morphed into an acoustic version of Love, cue laughs from around the church!
It was such a weird change, going from seeing him perform to a rapturous and sold out Royal Albert Hall to stood in a small(ish) church in his beanie hat, sweatshirt and glasses with nothing more than a couple of guitars and effects units - a really nice, intimate gig and probably the one I have enjoyed the most, mainly because it felt like he was there just for us, this small select group.
He also complained about how he dislikes singing, while demonstrating his full range from all out roars to falsetto and all points in between - unbelievable stuff.
Anyhow, he got to the end of the set and said that he was happy to hang around and meet everyone individually - everyone
. He stayed true to his word too, and although we were near the back of the queue (thanks to my wife taking a very badly timed piss) was still charming, effusive and genuinely happy to meet everyone.
Gig of the year for me, better than the RAH.
