Thought I might try my hand at getting my head around Fleshgod Apocalypse's latest after seeing it in a bunch of Album of the Year stuff.
The fact that their last albums sounded like wall of noise garbage didn't exactly endear them to me, even if I liked the concept. Thankfully this album is actually listenable.
What made it all click is the description of it being Luca Turilli-does-death metal. That pretty much is what's going on here. Neo-classical pretentious mixed with the Mediterranean epic death metal sound. Hell, this albums kills two birds with one stone. A proper realisation of what Fleshgod should have sounded like and a better Septicflesh album then their last two middling attempts.
Still need some time to digest it. It's all a bit to "grand" at times, so the hooks are few and far between. Still, even if I'm not entirely on board yet, it seems pretty damn good.
