I'd always heard good things about him but it was only last christmas that I decided to dive into the worlds of the Mythos. I bought three omnibus books with pretty much all his stories in and I have been reading them on and off since then. What I have read so far has mostly been excellent with a few stories that drag on a bit or being so over descriptive that it becomes a bit of a chore to read. He also uses a lot of words that were, even for the time, outdated and no longer used which can be confusing.
Aside from this most stories are masterful examples of progressive horror. He leaves a lot to the imagination, giving suggestions of 'things' and letting your mind fill in the rest which would usually annoy me in a book but its brilliant when he does it. A lot of his stories are only 5 or 6 pages long and each one of these shorter stories is a gem to be treasured like 'Dagon' and 'The white ape'. Stand out longer, novella length stories are 'At the mountains of madness', 'The case of charles Dexter ward' and 'Through the gates of the silver key'.
I'm also a fan of overcomplicated boardgames and when I learned of a game based on the Cthulu Mythos I had to get it. Its called 'Arkham Horror' and its a lot of fun, only played it once with the mrs and we got our asses handed to us. Its really interesting how it works as all the players are working together to stop the awaking of one of the old gods(Cthulu etc) and the game plays itself as the 'bad guy'. Proper good game. Incidentally that battle card game that Me posted the other day has taken all its artwork and symbols and stuff directly from the boardgame. Anyway its well worth a look.
Just wondering if there are any other fans of Lovecraft out there and what their thoughts are.
