Shenmue 1 and 2 HD [PC, PS4, XBone] - 20th August

Postby Prey » Sat Apr 14, 2018 10:07 am

"This is the definitive version of these all-time classics and will be the best Shenmue experience to date," Sega said. "The re-release will stay true to the originals with modernized features including fully scalable screen resolution, choice of modern or classic control schemes, PC graphics options, an updated user interface and the option to enjoy either the original Japanese or English voiceovers."

...Dang it I was gonna try and sell my DC copies off after I completed 1+2.

Hope the devs make the game less frustrating such as more accurate QTE prompt recognition (the DC pad was horrible with recognising inputs at times) and skip-able cutscenes (especially after you've viewed them once already!).

(The ending of S2 got reallly odd.)

I really never got the love for this series. Maybe it was technically impressive at the time, but it was dull and I can't imagine 18 years has improved it. I think it was telling that one of the standout parts of the game was getting a boring job.

They were tech demos for Yakuza.

Its a weird mishmash of "ugh!" and "wow!" On completion I simply ticked them off on my to finish list but after a while I felt nostalgic for the locations where Shenmue is set. The Dobuita area in S1, Hong Kong & Kowloon in S2; I believe that was the main draw for the game and what kept most people playing till the end.

Yakuza ended up being the next step forward, with more lively characters!

Edit - What evol said!

Perhaps the Japanese-voiced version was better, but I always hated the English voice work. Granted, it wasn't any worse than most western dubs of Japanese media, but that's hardly a glowing endorsement. I remember Ryu sounding particularly bored, which sadly added to the fairly gloomy presentation.

The change in VA performance between English and Japanese is quite something. After finishing S1 and starting S2 Ryo sounded more energetic with his Japanese VA, and the pacing of the game shot up dramatically compared to S1.
