I think it's more the fact that so many games came out last Firday, rather than just it's proximity to CoD.

Runs as smooth as butter; just got to the trade center - perhaps I'm not playing on hard enough difficulty but if you stay in one place its easy to mow down all the bad guys then you have the rest of the level to wander around on your own; which is a bit quiet. And saps atmosphere. Where's respawning when you need (like?) it...
Determined to finish Far Cry 3...finished 28/2/14. Not quite sure where this genre goes now...

I think the guards keep respawning until you kill the commanders, or at least there are more waves of them than in TNO where there was only two waves of re-enforcements.

There's now a demo for the game which includes the first level if you fancy giving it a try. Any progress made will go over to the full game should you choose to buy it afterward. The demo weighs in at 12gb.

GMG also has a sale on currently, this can be had for £20 if that's your bag.

I finished this over the weekend and I think it has some of the best moments in an fps ever, it really goes some places and has a great story. I was less enamoured with the gameplay though. It is terrible at letting you know when you are being hit so you can go from full health to nearly dead without even knowing it and coupled with this you don't know the direction from which you are being shot at most the time. The level design is also a bit off in terms of signposting. There were a number of times that I had no idea where I was supposed to go next so spent ages wandering around looking for where to go. I discovered fairly late that you can press a button to call up a waypoint, but this waypoint is tiny and disappears rather quickly. So I was reduced to wandering around spamming the button until I realised where it was trying to send me.

They should also have added some invincibility frames to some of the animations. Using your melee weapon in the middle of a fight is pointless as you will just end up being shot to death and when you realise you need to be just running through levels rather than sneaking, these two things makes the knife pretty much redundant.

Despite this once I had adapted my playstyle to fit all these foibles I had a fair amount of fun with the combat, it was just a shame that frustration was never that far away.

I do recommend that people play it though, as I said at the start it has some amazing moments that really must be experienced and if you enjoy fps games you will get enough out of the combat.

How would you compare it to last year's Doom?

I think Wolf 2 is the better game, I liked Doom's combat, but it wore out it's welcome and the story in Wolf is miles better than Dooms.

Oh.

Spoiler: show
Could they have chosen a worst moment to end the demo? That was terrible. The demo was pretty good though otherwise although I'm hardly spurred to buy the full release if I'm honest.
