Wild West Online

Postby Prey » Fri May 12, 2017 8:36 am

So two days ago a single screenshot surfaced sending RDR communities into meltdown as it was perceived to be a new screenshot from console exclusive Red Dead Redemption 2. Everyone went apeshit at how great the console based graphics were.

Then this happened...

Yesterday we posted a story about a possible Red Dead Redemption 2 screenshot that had been posted on the official Grand Theft Auto forums and started a huge debate. However, it turns out that the screenshot actually belongs to Wild West Online, a PC only MMO that was only revealed today.

PC Gamer is the one responsible for dishing the goods about Wild West Online, and including information about the game’s Kickstarter campaign, aimed at $250,000 in order to help speed development.

Development is already well underway however (as you could probably tell from the fact that it has screenshots), and the Kickstarter money is going to be used to add in more features. For example, if 1.7 million dollars is raised then the game gets train robberies.

As soon as it was known that it was actually from a PC game those same communities quickly turned on the poor old screen shot saying it actually looked complete rubbish. One screen shot to confuse them all.

Wild West MMO could be great thinking about it, if done right.

Or it could end up being pants.

It could be interesting, but only if the mould is broken. For example, does the concept of hundreds of identikit cowboys, cowgirls and ‘indians’ running around hovering up exclamation mark quests, spamming number keys to combo up ‘abilities’ while whittling down health-bars on set-spawn mobs sound of any interest? It doesn’t to me. And that is before you even mention grind, instances or endgame…

If they follow that route it will be F2P/P2W within 6 months and the servers will be dead within a year.

If not? Could be interesting. The Star Citizen “get us to $X and you get Feature Y” also rings alarm bells.

Colour me cautious.

I'm yet to be convinced that MMOs which end up on Kickstarter are going to be any good.

Rather embarrassing, considering how many I have played, but...fixed.

Found a bit more info on mmorpg.com

player gangs will either break or defend the law
seamless open world using server shards for "a few hundred" players each
the comparison to Red Dead Redemption is intentional
players can specialize as gatherers such as prospectors, farmers, etc. and will live in resource-themed camps
    player driven economy
crafting by finding and learning recipes
    story, character and gameplay driven
murder isn't the only way to break the law
bandit lifestyle, for instance, provides opportunities for bank robberies, stealing from other players' camps or in town, etc.
no NPC combat, just PvP engagement at the onset
    survival themes may be borrowed
stretch goals will add things like train robberies, etc.

A couple of things that could be an issue and bother me slightly. First thing - 'player driven economy' - That, in some cases, means prices will end up sky-high which means the casual player could be priced out of the market.

Second thing - no NPC combat, just PvP engagement at the onset - OK, so PvP is mandatory and other players can steal your stuff? Anybody play any of those survival games currently in beta on steam? Sound great in principle, but those who want to play casual, or like to adventure solo and don't group are going to get stuffed. This more than anything else concerns me. If its not handled correctly, you will get a game that will become unplayable for the majority of gamers who dip in now and then.

Yeah that doesn't sound like my cup of tea really because online communities tend to attract more toxic people than friendly ones. I'd prefer if it had good PvP elements but was primarily PvE based where you could party up with friends to play.

Basically just a larger scale Red Dead Redemption but online, essentially.

Yeah, PvP-only makes it a non-starter for me. If I want PvP I'll go and play Overwatch.

So it's another griefing simulator that will never be finished, except cowboy themed?
