For Honor - Multi-era Melee Combat (Release 14th Feb)

Postby Quietman » Thu Jan 26, 2017 10:05 pm

Could've sworn we had a topic for this but couldn't find it :( Got into the Closed Beta and, even though the 4v4 dominion mode is bugged, the 2v2 and 1v1 duels are a lot of fun with some real tactical sword play coming in. The system is really good and feels pretty intuitive but really hard to master as there are a lot of special attacks and combos each class can do.

I did a live stream here if anyone is interested :) It's still processing so the quality is a bit ropey.

If they can sort the 4v4 mode I'll do another one, but you can get a feel for it in the free mode practice arena. I think I'll probably pick it up on release but I don't know if I'll go all super limited edition mode.
IMO :P  :P  :P

Just played the tutorial, feels like a game that needs to be played on a pad, a mouse seems too sensitive.

Sorry I never got a chance to play with you Phil, was quite busy last weekend as we were doing various things for my wife's birthday.

The open beta starts on the 7th so maybe we can get some people together for that.

I enjoyed the beta, was a ton of fun. However, my only concern was the matchmaking system constantly matching me with people who had clearly not stopped playing all weekend, and had a prestige 3 (or whatever they are calling it) Orochi, who just tore everyone a new one. I'm hoping the full game will have a better matching system just so that it's a bit more even when it comes to the duelling. Well, until someone else interupts and they completely destroy you from every angle.

I feel this would be a game that would suit a group of 8 players who aren't bothered about stats, and can just have a blast playing together in their own lobby. If anyone wants to do that when it's out, I'm game.

Open beta is live right now until the 12th.

From what I've gathered so far there are a lot of connectivity issues and ingame problems linked with the fact everything is p2p rather than over proper servers. Something like that could kill a fast action game like this, though maybe servers will go live when it actually comes out.

Anyways, I'm downloading the beta now to get me a taste.

Okay, thoughts:

1v1 is a lot more fun than the domination zone capture mode. You can actually get a good feel for how each class works and have fun predicting your opponent's actions. 4v4 is just too much chaos to really enjoy the more finessed and tactical elements of the fighting, you either get rushed down by a group of enemies or just as you're about to beat someone in a duel they run away to find their allies; it doesn't really feel like what the game should be.

No characters seem particularly overpowered, everyone can tear you to shreds if you let them work within their strengths. It feels a lot like a fighting game where you need to know what each class is capable of and adequately predict their strategy to get the right hits in.

The viking raider is by far the most fun class I've tried. I've taken so many opponents off guard by charging head first into them at the start of a round, grappling them down to a corner and then wailing on them with heavy attacks. If they panic hard enough you can literally end a round in 10 seconds just by going full berserk at them. Also it can be quite funny to begin a round by charging them, picking them up onto your shoulder and just dumping them off the first ledge to their doom. Hardly honourable but funny as hell, often leads to them rage quitting. The last round I played the guy cottoned on to me constantly throwing him off the map so he ran to the lower level directly below me; the poor guy didn't know about falling attacks yet though, one plunging heavy blow with my axe and the guy was instakilled from full health.

The network is piss poor. I've had so many people drop mid match in 4v4 and sometimes when the host leaves it will glitch the whole game out whilst it tries to reconnect with a new host. A game based on reactions and timing such as this really needs proper servers, p2p is just not good enough. And to say that it's an open beta, nobody seems to really be playing. It can take upwards of two minutes to find a game on 4v4 or 2v2 at times and then people keep leaving before the game launches so we end up with bots at the start of the round. I've had a few dropouts back to the main menu mid-game myself.

Overall, I really like the 1v1 duel mode. Not enough to make me pay full price for this though. To say how much they're charging for it there really isn't a great deal of content or classes to play around with. Add on top that a multiplayer game lives and dies by its netcode and online features, it's not good enough that they went with p2p. It can't be a good sign that it's already so hard to get a game on an open beta so close to launch.

If anyone wants to have a game over the weekend, shout out.

And so ends the beta.

Brilliant game. Was just starting to get used to the Orochi in the last hour or so.

Won't be buying it though because Ubisoft are too tight to stump up for a good online system. £35 plus whatever the season pass costs to avoid being split off from the rest of the playerbase and they still can't be arsed to use real servers? Just no.

The Orochi is my favourite too. Just fancy enough to feel good without all the annoying bollocks of the Peacekeeper.

You picking it up on launch then Phil?

My favourite is between the Orochi and Warden. I love blocking everything someone throws at me then headbutting them into the ground and going ham with heavy attacks.

Yeah I will be, I didn't experience that many matchmaking issues so think it's worth a punt :)
