The gossip mill has gone into overdrive following some 4Chan posts by an alleged Ubisoft developer (as collated on NeoGAF) and echoed by a Kotaku report citing multiple anonymous sources (naturally you’ll want to pour salt on it, but don’t forget both Unity and Syndicate leaked well ahead of reveal).

According to both of these sources, there will be no Assassin’s Creed game in 2016; the next game has apparently been scheduled for 2017 because it will represent a major overhaul to the ageing series, and will be sent in Ancient Egypt.

Kotaku says the project is codenamed Empire, and that Watch Dogs 2 may release in 2016 to fill the gap left by the lack of annual Assassin’s Creed release.

The 4Chan source has several details not corroborated by Kotaku. According to this alleged leak, Empire is being developed by the team responsible for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, and is described as having “a Witcher feel”, with player progression and a freeform combat system.

I know I'm the crazy minority here, but Watch_Dogs was pretty damn good. Hopefully they can manage the jump in quality seen with the first Assassin's Creed to the sequel.

The controls put me off spending any great time in Watch Dogs. I tried both mouse and keyboard and gamepad and couldn't get either of them to a point where it was comfortable to play.

It was better than most open world games. Found the hate baffling, especially when folk kept going on about how it brought nothing new to the table but then say gta5 is the best thing ever. It was a solid game, hacking was neat, pass poor driving and bad writing brought it down.

Looks like Aiden Pearce has been given the boot for the sequel instead you will now play as...this guy!

One step forwards. Two steps back. That's the Ubisoft way.

He can't be much worse than Pearce. The guy was totally devoid of any personality at all. He a big factor in why the game was so damn dull.

I can't see stereotypical nerdy white teen hacker being any sort of improvement on Pearce though, can you?

Ubisoft have quite literally forgotten how to deliver up an interesting and enigmatic main protagonist that we actually want to root for.

If you dig a littler deeper, the actor in question:

We both know that the only reason I thought the character appeared as white was due to the cell phone light shining directly in his face and the fact I missed the darker coloured arm hanging down at his side. My mistake.

My point still stands regardless of whatever ethnicity he still looks generic and therefore will be highly uninteresting to play as just as Pearce was prior. Here's hoping I'm very wrong.

Not lighting any fires here. The first game had a few good points but after that it just felt standard open world to me.

I'd be interested in seeing what a non-generic looking modern day character from a grounded modern day setting would look like. :-k
