And their armour and magical barriers as well. I've read that the AI gets a bit smarter too on the higher difficulties.

There were a few fights on explorer mode I barely made it through, didn't lose many people either but the res scrolls are still a very limited commodity through the game (despite only using a few, only had 4 remaining at the end).

Reading around it looks like there's a way to craft them.

Sheet of paper + water essence + life essence.

The latter two aren't amazingly plentiful but you do get quite a few, so worth hanging onto it looks like.

I'll probably just savescum it every battle if I lose a party member and get low on res scrolls. 8)

It is worth trading with everyone just to see what they have to sell, I have found several (usually reasonably prominent characters) with Res scrolls for sale. They aren't cheap, but then there is so much loot around that if you have a cottage industry of selling shit all over the place you should have plenty of cash.

Well, on second playthrough I escorted the black cat out of Fort Joy, though completely accidentally. Got an achievement and a new ability, which was nice.

It died in the arena in my first game, rather unwisely decided to get involved as we were throwing fireballs around. Whoops.

This time I decided to do better, so made a little cat fort out of boxes and crates to keep it trapped while I went about my business. Thing is, I thought you had to free it by completing the whole first act. So I was rather surprised only 20 or so minutes later when I took the boat trip with Han to the marshes, when the achievement popped up. The cat teleported in with me (and initially I thought 'FFS, now I have to trap it again'), but, yeah, it appears that you literally only have to escort it out of the prison itself, which isn't so hard to do.

So I am gonna have a little moan.

Only a very wee one - I mean, with a game this expansive it was going to fumble something, and indeed I think it is the expansiveness that it falls down on. I am referring to some of the quests, which your actions can make uncompleteable (is that a word?). If I cut a bloody swathe through some key characters, OK, I may think back and think that I could have done it differently, but I have had an entire quest chain rendered uncompleteable simply by speaking to a character at the wrong time, when there was nothing to indicate that I should tackle other seemingly unrelated quest steps first. That annoyed me. Then I decided to follow up on a quest from the first act which had carried over. I think the intention was for you to enlist help in taking out a nearby den of enemies, but I had already been there, killed that. The result was that either I told the person I needed to speak to for this quest to fuck off and refuse them help, or have them misunderstand me and attack. Neither were palateable options.

So yeah - bit annoying at times, but that said I have had 50 hours from the title and loved most of it, I can forgive it some wrinkles.

It's very classic in that sense of the design then, Baldur's Gate has timed quests and all manner of similar things where you can completely miss them, sometimes without even knowing they existed as quests at all. There's an interesting balance to be found in creating enough little tips and hints that ensures player's don't accidentally complete a series of actions which means they miss out on content versus just letting things play out logically in line with the story as it's written and expecting the player to pick up on things themselves.

I personally quite like the fact that I might accidentally lock myself out of completing something, but it has to be well thought out and definitely not because I didn't do something prior to a hidden timer running down. Timers in RPG games seriously suck.

Adds replayability though! You might be tempted to start a new character and play through content in a totally different order next time. Players are definitely more likely to play multiple times if they know there's a chance they might find new content that they missed out on previously.

Haha nice thought Dave, but a game retaining my focus for 50 hours is rare indeed. I suspect I will play it through and that will be that, starting over at any time isn’t likely :)

Boy is this a dense game. Put a good amount of hours into it over the weekend, up to 52 now, and I'm finally nearing the end of Act 2. This might end up being my most played singleplayer game once I'm done.

Just out of interest how big is Act 3 Sly compared to Act 1 and 2?

Fair bit shorter. It's based on a smallish island with pretty much a single objective - takes a while to go through the requisite steps (5-6 hours maybe? depending on completionism).

Act 4, the final act, is a little bigger than 3. It has a fairly largish town with some side-quests as well as the main objective, but nothing like the scale of Act 2. If I had to put a figure on it, I'd say you're about two-thirds of the way through, perhaps slightly more.

I was thinking the same.

So: Bloodmoon Isle first.
Spoiler: show
Pick up the quest from Jalan/Jahan/Whatever to kill the Advocate on Bloodmoon Isle. Go to the isle and by all means batter the mobs by the tree (which tree becomes obvious when you see it) but DO NOT speak to the Advocate before you look at the three blazing statues and get the rest of the Bloodmoon isle quests. If you do, you will lock off the dialogue option which will allow you to complete these missions.

Next up, the sawmill occupied by the Lone Wolves. Can't really spoiler this as the warning needs to be clear: Don't clear the sawmill before you speak to the elves encamped to the south of the mill, otherwise you will close off the Saheila follow-up quest from Act 1 (assuming you freed the elf from the crime boss in Fort Joy).
