Artifact- Valve's next game

Postby DjchunKfunK » Wed Aug 09, 2017 8:58 am

Valve announced their next game at TI last night and it turns out they are making a CCG type game based around DOTA 2 characters. It sounds like it will differ slightly to stuff like Hearthstone as you have to build structures, but other than that there were no real details.

I'm sure the internet is currently exploding with rage that this wasn't Half Life 3.

Even if it's the best CCG ever, the CCG market is far too saturated at the moment for me to pay any attention to it. I expect it will do well simply because it's Valve, though.

I take it this isn't based on an existing franchise? I feel it's much easier to hook people in when you've got recognisable characters.

I thought it was based on DotA? Hence why it's got different boards that are based on the concept of playing lanes.

Oh, you may be right. I know nothing about DotA so just googled one of the proper nouns on a card and it brought me straight to the DotA wiki. They mention the game in the spiel for Artifact, but only in reference to it also having been made by Valve, and not the fact that this new game is based on it.

I must say I quite like the art style, although the board itself is remarkably uninspiring. Still, I'm not prepared to shell out for card packs in these things (I've *really* turned against microtransactions in the last year or so) so I don't really see any point in trying a new one.

Yeah it's going to be quite interesting to see how well this does considering it's coming out at the tail end of a whole lot of controversy surrounding microtransactions and certain governments legislating against them. I feel like a lot of people are probably getting a bit sick of them. But then, all this has to do is attract fans of DotA and that will be enough for it to be successful seeing as Valve already have such a huge playerbase for that game.

Thing is, card packs have normalised microtransactions so much that I'm not sure many would see it as a sticking point. Hell, we've had randomised card packs outside of gaming for longer than I've been alive.

Governments don't need to legislate against these things, they just need to force binge-watching Jimquisition episodes into their national curriculums.

Not sure torture is the answer.

Valve have talked about being able to trade cards in Artifact so I expect a lot of dodgy shenanigans to go on.

In all honesty I couldn't care less about all the DOTA trappings. The only thing that has me even half interested is Richard Garfield's involvement.

Granted not every game he's been involved in is a banger, but most if not all are interesting and fun to play.
