Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

Postby DjchunKfunK » Tue Nov 22, 2016 9:07 am

I know Sly posted about this in the Indie Game topic, but I thought it deserved it's own thread.

As mentioned it looks a lot like the old Commando and Desperado games, only set in feudal Japan. The game is due out on the 9th of December and you can grab a demo off GOG or Steam.

Good to give this a bit more prestige - I've played a bit of the demo this morning and it's actually really good!

If you played Desperados or Commandos it'll instantly seem familiar, which is good as there haven't been many games of that ilk released in recent years. The setting is pretty cool, as it gives you ninjas and samurai to play with, and graphically it looks great.

Not sure yet on what the release price will be, but reckon I'll definitely be picking this up at some point.

Word of (slight) caution on the demo, there's a time limit, so if like me you take your time, there a chance you, like me, won't get time to complete the second map as well :(

It seems to be about 90 minutes long, but may be closer to an hour of actual gameplay as opposed to sitting on menu or loading screens.

Does it have the rubbish controls and UI Commandos and Desperadoes had?

I had some credit on one of those key sites so picked this up for around £22. Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but once I have I'll post some impressions.

I played through the first mission last night and really enjoyed it. For reference I have never played a Commandos or Desperado game before, but I was getting a very Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 vibe from it.

I really like the system that allows you to chain moves together. There was this courtyard that I needed to get through that had two guys on the high-ground looking in my direction, a guy standing guard at the bottom of the stairs and another guard patrolling between the two. I sent one of my Ninjas to skirt around to the far left and hide behind a building then set him to kill one of the guards on the high-ground with a shuriken. Then I set my sniper on the roof to take out the other guard on the high-ground. Finally I set my Samurai to use his skill that takes out three people in a group on the guard at the base of the stairs. Then once the patrolling guy had reached the guy at the bottom of the stairs I pressed enter and all the actions were carried out at once, eliminating all the guards without raising the alarm.

I also like that some of the skills use items that must then be retrieved before they can be used again. So the shuriken for instance must be collected after being used and the Samurai has a bottle of Saki that he can put down to distract enemies which must also be collected again.

The game looks great and I think it is a really neat touch that they have included Japanese VO, which I have turned one, it really adds to the atmosphere.

So yeah, so far my impressions are really positive.

I've still yet to load this up again since buying it :/

I got stuck into a replay of GTA5 instead as a way of blowing off a bit of steam at the end of the day

But, yes, from the demo it is a lovely little game. The bits about the chain move and reclaiming items are lifted from Desperadoes (maybe Commandos as well, but I didn't play that as much so can't remember), but it's nice to see them implemented again here.

Neat, the game made it into the top 10 on Steam for the week.

92% in PCG:

Shadow Tactics’ impressive missions, laden toy box and likeable cast make it one of the greatest stealth games of the last decade.

I really need to get stuck into this, haven't done much since I bought it. But what I have played is very, very good.

Ooooooo that could be interesting. Not a huge fan of isometric stuff but this might be worth a play.

It is really good fun and I should get back to it. I think I'm up to the 4th mission.
