Tyranny- Next Obsidian RPG

Postby DjchunKfunK » Fri Aug 19, 2016 8:53 am

No thread for this rather strangely. It's due out towards the end of this year and sees you play an underling of the ruling Overlord Kyros. It is your duty to roam the land restoring order and maintain Kyros' rule.

It's set to be a pretty wordy game with Obsidian saying it has over 600,000 words in it and that they are aiming for something that can be replayed multiple times.

“We designed the game to be one you can play multiple times. At the bare minimum, there are four major storylines through the game, but within each of those storylines, there's a lot of different permutations and variabilities,” game director Brian Heins explains during the demo. “One of our major questlines, there are actually eight different possible playthroughs of that major questline, just based on different choices you make in different areas of the game.”

Should be quite interesting to play someone who is ostensibly a bad guy.

Yeah I like the bad guy take on this. Shame it's an isometric thing as they aren't my bag really.

Got a bit burned with Pillars, never really felt it like I did (and still do) with the proper old-school isometric RPGs. Might wait on a price reduction on this.

Pillars is worth another shot now that both DLC are out and they've made a few general improvements. I replayed a few months ago and enjoyed it far more than the first time, and the DLC is decent.

The gameplay was never a problem for me, the world just wasn't interesting enough.

I'm genuinely curious as to what you would consider interesting in lore terms, because Pillars had me quite fascinated at times. Funnily, though, I found the least interesting part of it was the primary story - the history of the world and its gods and various peoples are much more interesting than your character's past.

It felt like you missed all the interesting stuff like the God Weapon build-up and you were now playing in the boring period afterwards. There was a ton of lore, but none of it was that interesting to me, I can't even remember what you were supposed to be doing in the main story, that's how little an impact it made on me.

The character side stories were pretty decent though.

I've had the same lack of impact problem. There's not much I can point to as being wrong with the game and I enjoyed it at the time. About the time of the first expansion release, I realised I couldn't actually name half of the party members and had forgotten at least one major detail like class or race about the rest. Very little of it stuck with me.

I just read the thread title as "Tranny" and thought what an unusual name for a game by obsidian. Is it a dress-up sim???

Argh, I keep going back and forth over whether or not to get this one day one. Out next week.

On the one hand, I was a bit underwhelmed by Pillars and never finished it, on the other hand the premise for this sounds really, really good. And I kind of want a new big, detailed RPG to sink my teeth into.

£35 is potentially a lot to spend if it ends up being another Pillars for me. In particular, the combat in that game got repetitive very quickly.

Instant Gaming have it for £28 if that helps.

From what I have seen in videos the combat is very similar to that of Pillars, so if you got bored of it there then you might not enjoy it in Tyranny. On the flip side it might be that the story and setting didn't grab you that much in Pillars and therefore lessened your enjoyment of the combat.

Here is some gameplay of the start of the game which might help. Skip to 37 minutes.

Yeah, the premise of this sounds like enough of a hook to get me more engaged with the world. I think at least some of the problem with Pillars (as well as the combat) was all the Kickstarter fluff that got added in - great long, badly written narrative dumps done by backers. I take it this one isn't crowd-funded? Probably that will help too.
