Reviews of this on Steam seem to be slightly mixed at the moment. I'll probably pick this up a little sooner than I usually would, but not at the current price.

Civ games tend to be heavily discounted before too long, or at least by the time I'm thinking about picking them up. Skipped 5 as I'd played 4 so much, but it's been a while so may end up looking into this in six months or so.

I haven't played 5 in a while, as I was playing Beyond Earth. I will pick it up next month.

I'm really enjoying it, a lot of the changes they have made seem good. The biggest one for me is that it is easier to see where you stand in regards to the victory conditions. This means that for the first time ever I went for something other than a Domination Victory in my first game. The stuff they did with City States is also another area in which I like the changes. It's much easier to keep them onside now meaning that I don't just ignore them like I did in Civ 5.

The decision to spread the cities out means that your decisions on city placement are a lot more important and it seems like there is less to build, but everything you do build holds more importance.

There have been some complaints about the UI, but personally I like what they have done with it. You don't access city info by clicking into the city now to bring up another menu, you just select the city and then everything is accessible from there.

Ok, so I didnt wait until next month.

I had a quick dabble last night. I dont mind the new interface, it seems clean and uncluttered. The new builders were a shock at first, not being able to set them to auto. But at least they build stuff instantly, I dont mind that. The civics and stuff look interesting. Looks and runs nice. First impressions are good.

The Total War series killed Civ for me. Once you command your own battles, there is no going back :)

They are totally different experiences for me and there is easily room to like both, but fair enough if these types of games no longer appeal.

Diplomatic AI seems to be improved (or not depending on your point of view). That bitch from Egypt declared war on me and in 20 turns I was gone.

Need to do things a little different in 6 I think. I usually work on the infrastructure, and looking at the big picture. But I think I need to work on defence before anything else first, in 6.

As far as total war goes, I turned off the game after the first Medieval Total War. That game still remains my favorite. I really don't like the modern 3D/Live map. Don't know why, I just didn't like it. Disliked Rome:TW immensely. Tried it a few times since, still hate it. Just one of those things.

The first TW: Rome is the pinnacle of the series imho.

I've still only played about 20 minutes of TW: Warhammer since picking it up, really must try that again at some point...

I cant put my finger on why I don't like TW:Rome. Its not just the map, there is something else that doesn't click. So knowing all that, god knows why I bought Empire:TW as well. #-o

I've always thought with the TW series that your own interest in a particular period of history affects how much you enjoy one of their titles. Always been fascinated by the Romans, me.

Yeah historical appeal is a lot of what makes a certain TW game for me, hence Medieval still being my favourite.

gpa, some civs will make use of the fact that in the classical period there is no penalty to warmongering if you declare a surprise war. As long as you have enough units up you should be OK. Diplomacy AI is a bit broken from what I have read. Making deals in particular is very easy to manipulate and doesn't appear to work properly.

Civ and Total War are nothing alike. I would never consider one to invalidate the other.
