Honestly, I'm more jazzed about the companion game, EverQuest Next - Landmark.
Sounds a little like the huge, plot based world of Second Life with the creation tools of Minecraft, all wrapped up in the EQN aesthetic.

Could be a right laugh, plus it's coming out first.

Fate whispers to the warrior "You cannot withstand the storm"

The warrior whispers back "I am the storm"

I like the sound of the game, but can't help but recall Warhammer Online - that had the idea of mobs that would wander, group, attack towns or one another, retreat etc based on the actions of the players and other groups of mobs. That was without deformable landscapes, but proved not to be feasible to employ.

I suppose that most of all, I like that the genre is finally realising that it needs to move away from the WoW/DAOC/EQ model that it has been stuck in for so long.

I will keep an interested eye on this, but it seems to me to be too ambitious.

I was discussing the traditional MMORPG model last night. It really does feel like it's had its day now; it was designed to be playable under network conditions that couldn't handle real-time combat, while also taking strain off of the server. I think Planetside 2 has shown just what a modern MMO should be capable of, and that has hundreds of players in a single battle - traditional fantasy MMOs rarely have anywhere near that many people fighting in one place at one time. I find it strange that WoW's dwindling subscription numbers aren't suggesting to developers that they should be trying something else.

I think having been quite early to the MMO party, I got burned out and saw this a long while ago. I love, and have always loved, the concept of MMO gaming, and my DAOC and subsequent WoW guilds have provided me with a lot of people who are now friends irl, and that has to be a good thing.

It has to change though, PS2 is a great game but as a standalone title - I would not be interested in more identikit PS clones any more than I am WoW clones. Fantasy MMO's need to make a step-change, not merely evolve.

Was watching this video about the creation tools:

So, it's a free-to-play MMO with Minecraft meets Second Life building tools?
People are going to make crazy, crazy things with this. I'm excited. :D

I just received an email from SOE telling me that the closed beta for Everquest Next Landmark has arrived and I too can join in the fun by buying Founders Pack for just £13.99. Oh and apparently Founders Packs make great presents!

I suppose what with all the early access stuff it was only a matter of time until an MMO started to charge you to get into the beta. However paying SOE to beta test a game that will be free to play on launch without seemingly getting anything at the end seems a bit dodgy.

£13.99 is just the lowest priced pack by the way, the most expensive pack, or the Best Value pack as SOE title it, costs £74.99. For that price all you get is a load of in-game stuff which doesn't say whether it carries over to the full game, 4 Closed Beta invites to give out to friends, your name in the credits and a head start on the Open Beta.

It all seems rather seedy to me, you are paying SOE to help them beta test a Free to Play game.

Of course it carries over.

Its not the first time this has happened either.

What carries over? The in-game nonsense stuff?

It's the first time I've seen something like this for a game that will be free on launch.
