Mojang's Caller's Bane - née Scrolls

Postby DjchunKfunK » Wed Jun 05, 2013 10:00 am

I've tried searching for a previous topic, but there doesn't seem to be one.

Anyway Mojang's latest game has entered paid open-beta. It's a take on the Magic the Gathering card games, but you fight on a hexagon playing field ala Kings Bounty. The beta includes multiplayer and AI skirmishes and they plan to add a single-player campaign at some point. You can buy new scrolls with in-game money and there is also a micro-transaction shop which is mainly for the purchasing of cosmetic items, but you can also buy scrolls. However I believe that all Scrolls can be purchased with the in-game currency.

Official trailer

The beta can be got for £12.95 and just like Minecraft the game will be continued to be supported and you will receive all future content free of charge.

I'm tempted to check it out as I like a good card battler.

Well I bought it and it is a lot of fun so far. I have only played a few scenarios and a few medium games against the AI to try and get familiar with my deck. You don't get a lot of gold for completing AI matches so it could take a while to gain enough gold to grab another deck, if you don't want to have to pay for it with real money. However it may be that online games give you more gold and so it has been designed to encourage people to play that way.

It does look quite neat. Although I would probably never spend any real money on it after buying it, so I'd need to see exactly how much of an advantage real money gives.

All scrolls can be bought with in-game money so in that respect I think it is rather even. Of course if you want to dump a load of money into the game you will have an advantage of sorts as you will have more cards to choose from, but it will still come down to skill as to whether you can win a game.

Ok so I've played a fair bit more of this over the weekend so I thought I would give people a few of my thoughts.

First off don't pick Energy if you want an easy ride. I have played five ranked matches against people and have only won my last one. The first few games I played I was getting beaten really quickly. I'm not sure how the matchmaking system works as to whether you get matched with people who have played the same amount of games as you or it is just random, but to start with it is tough playing other people.

I think part of my problem was the deck I had picked to start with. The Energy deck requires you to just survive the first few rounds and then bring out the big guns after you have built your resources up. This proves rather tricky with the base deck because you have a mix of cards without any real way to develop a strategy. Now that I have bought a few more cards I have been able to develop a deck which allows me to focus on range and build up a wall of structures in front to defend myself with. So if you are going to get this spend some time playing against the AI and completing the challenges as this will give you a good amount of gold and allow you to buy more cards that will in turn allow you to specialise your deck.

Games can take a while to play. The one I won took over half an hour to finish which is longer than your typical CCB game. This probably gives you a chance to claw your way back into the game so if you fall behind at the start there is time to fight your way back into contention.

Overall though it is a really fun game to play and for me it requires a lot more strategy than your average card battler. The addition of a board means that there is an extra layer of tactical depth to a game which for me gives me more enjoyment as I feel that what happens in the game is more under my control. My major problem with CCBs in the past is that there is a fair amount of luck in what cards you draw, but in Scrolls while there is still luck with the cards you get, you also need to use them properly on the board. You could get all your best cards out quickly, but if you place them poorly on the board then you are not going to win.

It will be interesting to see what they add as the game goes along. They obviously need some more decks and could do with tweaking some of the cost of things. Right now it costs 6000 gold to buy a new deck which will take a long time to accumulate especially as you first need to get gold to buy more cards for your deck. So if you make the wrong choice about your starting deck you are stuck with it for a while. They could also do with a clearer indication of which are rare cards and which are normal along with a bit more colour. The various decks do look different, but they are all pretty similar in colour. The game has a very orange/red feel to it and it would be nice to see a bit more colour.

However having seen what they did with Minecraft I think that Mojang will be adding well thought-out content. They have a good solid and fun base to work from and for me it was worth the £14 I paid.

It's not bad. As you are only allowed 3 copies of a single scroll and deck must be 50+ scrolls, they urgently need to increase the number of scrolls available to each of the three factions (or add more factions).

At the moment, most of the decks are identical.

Plus, the game mechanics are actually very simple compared to, say Magic the Gathering, where you can win games without casting a single Creature spell.

Overall, I would probably recommend people wait for a few months so more features and scrolls can be added.

What do you mean by it being simpler because you have to cast a creature spell?

I would argue that the Energy deck is different to the other two as the other two decks allow you to get a lot of weak units out quickly and then either buff them with spells or by summoning similar creatures. Energy focuses on more expensive ranged units and units that do aoe damage. I agree that they do need some more cards and decks though, but it is early and I'm sure they will add them.

At the moment you only have creature and buff scrolls. Whoever get's the best creatures out, generally wins. That's very simple and one-dimensional.

You need another few layers to the game.

There needs to be a lot more creature manipulation scrolls, direct damage scrolls, card draw increasing scrolls and mana (what's it called again?) increasing scrolls.

There needs to be more strategy involved than simply getting your biggest creature out as soon as possible.

Have you played Magic before? If you like Scrolls, try it. It will blow your mind.

Which deck did you pick? Energy has a fair amount of damage scrolls and you can't get units out quickly because they cost a fair amount of resources.

I've tried Magic in the past, but for some reason it didn't quite click with me.

I'm trying Order.

Their creatures generally complement each other, but I feel you need a good starting hand to get anywhere.

I've played a few games and found a few new scrolls, but it's very difficult to build a deck with a specific goal in mind when you can only have 3 duplicates and you need 50+ scrolls.

Yes I did thank you. I never got around to putting any serious amounts of time into it, but I still have it installed in the hope that one day I'll be able to.

That's the plan anyway. :D
