Xenonauts (XCOM spiritual successor)

Postby Mantis » Thu Apr 11, 2013 1:44 pm

Not sure how there isn't a thread for this given that it's been in development for a good number of years now. Being made by a very small indie team who took the project to Kickstarter last year to get the final leg of funding done. It reached 300% funding last June and the devs have been working on implementing a lot of extra stuff since then.

It looks fantastic, far more like an XCOM game than Firaxis' last attempt.

http://www.xenonauts.com/

It entered beta a few weeks ago and will be up on Steam soon for those who want to pay on the Early Access store.

I need to qualify that statement by saying that beta, to us, means this: you can now play the game from start to finish, and we’ve shifted our focus from adding new features to fixing up bugs, balance and generally improving the user experience of the game. It’s NOT a beta in the AAA sense of the word, where it’s basically a finished project being given an extended public demo.
Therefore if you want a polished experience, you’ll still have to wait a little longer. The current game does still have bugs and crashes in it, it doesn’t have great balance and there is still some placeholder art and research descriptions. We’re working hard on fixing all of these up, but that will only be complete at the end of the beta.

I'm pretty sure there used to be a thread for this maybe it has been culled or lost to the mysts of time.

Been following it on and off and meant to support it on Kickstarter when it was up last year, but for some reason I never got round to it. I think I'll be checking the early access out.

Yeah I definitely will.

Much as I loved XCOM, I want procedurally generated maps and time units in my TBS's.

I got it before it went to Kickstarter and have been so far impressed with the game on and off through the various alpha releases, they got the whole X-com feeling from the off. Sure you don't actually get the same named aliens due to licensing but I'm sure someone will mod them in for us as a tribute ;)

May not have the flasy washy graphics from the reboot but you get the full experience of what made X-com X-com!

That is enough for me. I loved XCOM but it was....lacking.

I don't normally bother with these paid alphas because I like to enjoy a finished product when I've handed cash over. This might be an exception to the rule though.

Aye, I ponied up the cash last night after reading a lot of positive press from journo's who had had hands-on time with the Alpha.

If it is XCOM polished for the current generation of visuals, that will do me fine.

It is very enjoyable now, it was buggy mess long time back but they have sorted it all out and it's never crashed on me for a long time when playing it :)

I've been watching some Youtube clips of the latest release version - it's looking really nice. Decent soundtrack too.

I think I'd rather wait till it's fully polished though before trying it.

There are some small elements missing, but nothing that will significantly detract from your game experience (given the short time I have played anyhow).

I may get this. I liked the new X-Com big 3D spectacle thing (though it was, let's face it, rather dumbed down and arcadey), but this looks more true to its roots. I must support it!
