Dota 2

Postby NG » Sun Jan 27, 2013 5:51 pm

There's been an increase in people playing Dota 2 from the PW community, so for those that are completely new, here's some stuff that may help. There is quite big learning curve to Dota 2 knowing about each hero/character that you're playing as & against & so on.

I found the game eternally frustrating when I first started playing. The way I was insta killed by enemies no matter how much I leveled or spent level points. The way you are forced right back to the base camp after running across the map to your death, even using boots of speed didn't lessen said frustration. But after trying what seemed like almost every character class (all of which looks so awesome you feel utterly spoilt for choice) I finally tried a Dragon Knight and swiftly found myself enjoying the game far more. I even took down a level 24 enemy at one point fleeing my group at just level 18.

It's a decent little game but the initial experience was nothing short of woeful. Thanks for the tips and for the thread itself NG.

It's helpful if you've played any other MOBA style game before. But I still found the UI to be really awkward and messy when I started playing. It took me four games to get a grip on how the store actually works.

I still prefer Smite though.

Maybe I've just got used to it, but I didn't have any real problem with it. Incidentally I've posted a thread about getting people together for a game in the PW Gaming sub-folder.

www.dotafire.com is a great place to go for guides and builds for all the heroes.

Decent little game?

http://www.dota2alttab.com/ is useful for simple, read-as-you-play guides on each hero.

Guy called Pyrion Flax makes a lot of funny Dota videos which go through the basics of Dota - http://youtu.be/7f-jR3Vo3Rw. I always link these to new players as I think they capture the horror and madness of trying to penetrate the game.

No, but it's incredibly easy to get a key for it.

I am currently on a terrible run of games. I've lost four out of the last five, one of which was down to horrendous lag which made it very hard to avoid being killed. I also need to settle on a good secondary character as someone else keeps picking my favourite character the Drow. Most of the guys I have gone with recently have not been to my liking at all.

Are you with Virgin media, Dj? I had lag, timing out issues & server disconnects & week ago, there wasn't anything mentioned by other players on the Steam dota forums but a lot of discussion on the VM broadband forums.

Windrunner may be a good alternative to the Drow, she has a great escape ability & sniping powershot, her ultimate isn't great till you have decent items that give you damage/health increase.

Is Drow still stupidly easy to completely dominate with? Last time I played a couple of games as her everyone was abusing me for picking a noob hero.

In fairness, I'm not particularly good at the game and I absolutely wrecked everyone with her. -_-

Her passive was nerfed recently, so her aura no longer affects ranged creeps globally. Meaning her mere presence in a game will no longer push every lane. She's still tricky to deal with because unlike most carries she starts doing serious damage very early and she's an easy hero to play well. That said, she's rarely picked in high skill games because her lack of any escapes and general squishyness makes her easy to shut down.

The main reason this game had the shortest ever stay on my HDD I think - it is full of the dregs of the MMO gaming barrel.
