Am working from home today and plan to dip into it over lunch.

I have pretty much decided the following though:
- I will only play it on private mode, I have no desire for interaction with cunts ingame.
- I will only play the bits I understand, the whole factions and engineers bit has left me completely nonplussed.
- I only like flying about in space, the planet landings are (visuals aside, will take that as read) deadly dull.

You should try the Mobius private group Snowy. No gits out for pvp griefing but it got a bit of life to it that just plays the environment.

Engineers is alright mate worth a general dabble to improve stuff like fsd range etc power play is bollox though.

Planetary side is OK but horses for courses I guess.

Pick the group option at start up screen instead of open or private. Type in Mobius to add yourself to the authorisation list the chap that runs it strangely called Mobius will let you in after about a day or so maybe a lot less if he's online. Once he's done that the option to join in the group will appear in the group list.

Finally got my Federal Assault Ship - packs a fair punch but seems to have shields made of tissue paper!

Meh, yeah I suppose.

Getting the Chief Petty Officer Federation rank was pure grind, and I suspect the Engineers is going to be the same...

It's easy to get a decent level with them. Level 3 of 5 is attainable easily and gives a decent boost to whatever you want to boost. The "grind" is there if you want it and some do. The best way of getting to level 3 is to just spam level 1. The level 1 requirements for any given enginner are usually very simple to fulfill with easy to find stuff. Visit to engineer to see what they want and just collect lots of that stuff for level 1. Go back and spam the thing until you get level 3 to 4 unlocked. Don't bother applying any of the results of the level one spam. Wait till you unlock level 3.

Inara.cz is a good site for researching where to find materials. Also the engineers sub forum on frontier has stickies that are worth looking at.

Oh man I remember them so well from the old Elite - when you got ripped out of hyperspace and found yourself in empty space with no stars nearby, you knew you were in trouble...

Annnnd resurrect.

Worth a post this, as I achieved a lifetime goal yesterday (of a sort). I bought my Fer De Lance.

I bought Elite originally on the CBM64 way back in the 80's and I spent countless hours playing it. There was a little chart of all the ships in the box - like this but white wireframes on a black background. This was blu-tacked to my bedroom wall next to the '64 and the old TV I played it on. Each ship had a description, and I loved the looks and description of the Fer De Lance - effectively the rich man's Lamborghini repurposed by bounty hunters as a fighting ship par excellance.

I used to daydream about being able to buy different ships in Elite, so that I could fly one myself - more Boba Fett than Han Solo that way I reckoned.

E:D was released and again I absolutely loved it, but no FDL in the available ships. Not for a long time, but then - there it is! Available to buy! Fast as all-get-out and festooned with hardpoints including one Huge one, normally the preserve of the biggest ships in the game. Only problem is, 54 million to buy and another 80 million to kit out. I don't have that kind of money.

Or at least I didn't. I have tried trading, but it is pretty dull, same for mining. One thing I had not looked at though was exploration, and man can you make some money doing that! I sold my trusty Federal Assault Ship, bought and geared up an Asp Explorer - no guns, massive frameshift drive, huge fuel scoop, top rated system and surface scanners - pulled up the 'Road to Riches' web page via Reddit, dialled in my location, and off I went.

I initially spent probably 3 hours or so exploring - I did the first 16 systems on the list, flew back to my home base wondering what my efforts had netted me, and was pleasantly surprised to have bagged nearly 16 million (and three explorer ranks) for the info I had collected. I put in a couple of lengthier stints, only held back by the fact that in this weather an Oculus Rift gets extremely sweaty and uncomfortable to wear.

So I headed back to Jameson Memorial station (all ships and upgrades available, with a 10% discount on the ships), cashed in my exploration data, bought and geared my Fer De Lance. Well, except for a new hull, but for a military composite that will set me back an additional 40 millon  Anyhow, it looks the business, sounds the business, and punches like Mike Tyson on PCP. Piddly fuel tank and not much in the way of compartments, so may well make way for a Python down the road, but regardless 30-something years after my daydreams, I can tell you that it felt mighty special to sit in the pilot's seat of my very own Fer De Lance 8)

NIce :)

I think I had the same ship chart as you :)

I couldn't wait to play it with filled in ploygons rather than wireframes as it made it quite difficult to dock not knowing what side I was heading for.

I only recently got myself a python whihc is still quite lowly kitted out. I engineered the engine to give me some distance so that helps.

Haven't played in a while but am also tempted by the road to riches route.

It is definitely worth doing mate and is quite therapeutic. With a 32Ly jump range in the Asp, it doesn't take long before you are outside explored space, just you and some astral bodies, which you fly about surface scanning the worthwhile planets. You get used to being the only person out there, indeed if you see another ship (I didn't) I imagine it would cause a hasty hyperspace - and in a geared exploring ship there is not much that would have a hope of finding you again.

Be sure to have a read up and make sure your ship has everything it could need. A key thing I didn't mention is the remote component repair system - the last thing you want is to have one of your internals broken for whatever reason when you are 1000Ly from the nearest inhabited system! I think that is only likely if you decide to land on any of the planets you discover, which I didn't bother with.

I reckon that going by my approach above you can reasonably expect to bank 5m+/hour. That is not even going that far out. Just don't die, or all the data you have collected is lost.

Founders edition mate - god knows I paid for that (although I have had my money's worth and some).

I have to say it is an absolute godsend though - I know when I dock there that I can get everything I need in one place, so pulling a new build together is much quicker than if I have to zip about collecting weapons/internals.

You can still get access to it though, just get yourself to Elite rank in Exploration
