Survival is tough but you are tougher also. Didn't take more than a couple of shots to kill you but the same applies to enemies.

Make sure you're constantly listening to the radio too. That's my favourite bit :)

Oh and try it in VR. Awesome sauce!

Yes, the Diamond City dj is brilliant. Provided some proper belly laughs at times.

So I've reinstalled it and started a new game in Survival mode. :D

I made it to the first house in Concord where there's a mattress upstairs, where I saved the game. Although I guess I should have just made a bed in the workshop. Didn't think of that.

People bitched about the bed saving thing but it's easy to have network of safe areas after a few hours for saving. I never did this myself but I think you can have a sleeping bag in the inventory and bring it out for saving on the run.

Okay, so doing the Concord/museum/deathclaw quest early on was probably a mistake. I'll level up a bit first and build up my settlements. Need to get some food production going.

I need to spend more time to work out what I think of it tbh. It's an interesting take on things. Normal mode is still great IMO for exploring the world and seeing the sights, meeting all the sidekicks, going on missions, etc, even if it does get a tad easy after a while.

I always do the deathclaw bit early. I have the 'backing away while shooting and swearing skill' worked out quite nicely now. :D

I need to re-install this and give survival mode a go.

Oh yeah, in normal mode I would. But in survival mode it's very different - you have to go through a sequence of fighting raiders inside the museum, being jumped by several more outside the museum, then fighting the deathclaw - all without saving.

And with enemies doing so much more damage in this mode it's a constant knife edge at early levels. Plus you haven't built up a proper supply of chems/food/etc yet.

Normal mode is great for general Fallouting and being a wasteland badass, whereas survival mode is great for the opposite reason. You see the army of raiders throwing down with a deathclaw and think, nope, my kidnapped son probably isn't here, and nobody would mind if I just ran away very, very quickly. Also, the removal of fast travel - while daunting and inconvenient - gives you a true appreciation of the world and forces you to risk-assess every journey to determine if it's worth it.

I'd never want to replace the regular Fallout 4 experience, but I love what survival mode brings to the table.

The deathclaw doesn't fit inside the blown out shop in front of the museum. I shamelessly gun him down from in there. It's not a bug or an exploit it's just the damn things biology making it die.

I was trying to do that, but it ran down the road so I left the shop to get its attention again. But when I ran backwards into the doorway I got my bearings wrong somehow and was trying to walk through the blocked window.

It then brushed against me causing instadeath.

I'm thinking that a mod which removed the main quests - all of them, really - and most NPC's too, threw in most all the survival stuff, and just let the lone survivor wander and explore would be pretty awesome.

In the meantime, I got the Nexus mod manager and added some things that make sense to me, such as a small fission (or maybe fusion?) battery that has an on/off switch and produces 20 power (so much more tidy than big huge generators everywhere!). Another one that gives the pw for every terminal, because fuck me but that mini-game got old after the first five thousand tries :o Vivid Fallout makes everything more gorgeous. And a Salvage Beacon mod that gets these lazy-ass settlers to wander out and carry my swag back home for me :D

I haven't touched mods yet for FO4. I'll have a look at some point.

I do think it could do with two different Survival modes though. One with normal saves and one without - simply so that people with busy lives can still experience it while dropping in & out quickly.

All the other aspects of survival mode are relevant to the gameworld itself and are great, but the lack of saves outside beds has a whiff of 'Ironman/nerd challenge' about it.

Have you tried the sleeping bag thing Kat? I'm really just intrigued if it works sorry :)

I never used sleeping bags with survival mode, but contrary to my ethos with gaming in general I like the restriction imposed by saving at beds. It adds a real danger to any action. I think it’s because I only play survival mode if I’m actively seeking a brutal, unforgiving challenge, and without the risk of losing the last 20-30 mins it doesn’t work.
