The Elder Scrolls lore is extraordinary, and to hear people call it dull is really saddening.
For the MMO, it should certainly keep the same sort of interface and viewpoint. The last thing we need is another quickbar buff-fest... eeuuugrhh.
Also if they're doing all of Tamriel - no small feat - I'll be interested to see how similar the landscapes of Vvardenfell, Cyrodiil and Skyrim are to the previous games.
Edit - IGN reporting that it's third person with skills activated from a hotbar.
It's already dead to me.
The Elder Scrolls lore is uninspired trite high fantasy imo.
But that aside, when will the devs learn? Since WoW, nobody has even vaguely tried to do anything new, and all have fundamentally failed to deliver (with the exception of LOTRO which has carved itself a niche purely on the fact that it is unutterably huge, captures the feel of Tolkien's world perfectly, and continues to do well in its F2P format). Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, SWTOR, Aion and others have all used the selfsame tedious fucking approach as WoW and, unsurprisingly, have failed to reach the standard set by Blizzard.
Someone needs to have the balls to innovate
. MMOs need not all be cut from the same cloth. Planetside showed that you can do FPS combat in a MMO world, and nobody (other than SOE with Planetside 2) have tried to do anything like it since - why the fuck not? I honestly think that devs look at the mighty piles of lucre that Blizz amass with WoW and get blinded by it. Also too many listen to the core of WoW die-hards that populate every MMO and demand that all games must be built the same way. Must have quest trackers, instance finders, PvP battlegrounds, skill trees, reputation grind, blah blah blah - and then are unsurprised when the majority of gamers who decide to take a punt find the experience no different from WoW, just less polished.
It is going to take someone actually having the balls to break the mold to be the next successful MMO - and this sounds like it aint gonna be it.
Wake up Bethesda - EA failed with an IP as strong as Star Wars (not that it is set in the proper SW universe) when they aped WoW, what makes you think that your far less known backstory will be enough?
