South Park: The Stick of Truth [360, PC, PS3] Delayed 2014

Postby Sly Boots » Sat Dec 03, 2011 5:15 pm

Surprised there's been no thread started for this. Maybe people in general are a bit meh, but I'm a big SP fan. That said, this does seem like an unusual choice.

Anyway, a few reasons to be hopeful:

- it's being written and voiced by Matt Stone and Trey Parker
- Obsidian is making it
- it's not an FPS!

Some other details:

- You play as a silent protagonist. A new kid in town who must work to fit in.
- It’s the first South Park game Stone and Parker have actively participated in and written the script for.
- Obsidian is using the Dungeon Siege III engine, there will be five classes (wizard, paladin, adventurer, rogue, and a fifth unannounced class).
- Apparently “elements of the combat system are like Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games”. So it’s an RPG map with turn-based encounters.

Coming out some time next year by the look of it.
My face is tired.

Yeah... I'm reluctant to get excited until I know more about it. Obsidian as the developer suggests that they're actually serious about making an RPG, but I'm still dubious.

More or less what Wrathbone said. I like SP, and I love Obsidian, but... well, my initial impression is confusion. I want to know more before I form an opinion either way.

I dunno, that'd be my first reaction too, but Stone and Parker actually being involved and Obsidian developing is enough to give me pause and wait for more details.

It sounds like they are making a decent go of it, but I think I'm right in saying there has never been a good film or TV show based game.

The original South Park games for N64 and PsOne were pretty decent.

The recent Tower Defence game on Xbox Arcade was thoroughly enjoyable (on co-op atleast).

Not played it, I remember someone saying that one of the Riddick games was good but the other(s) were rubbish so it balances out as meh ¬_¬

There's only two, one is great, the other is merely pretty good.

South Park Rally was good fun.

When I first saw this bit of news I was a bit surprised, but Obsidian tend to make good RPGs no matter what the source material is so I look forward to seeing what they can do with this.

Holy crap, it actually looks like South Park:

Also:

This is an astonishing turn of events. Obsidian’s RPG based upon long-running Pixar-bothering animation showcase South Park looks quite a lot like South Park. In fact, it looks almost exactly like South Park. I could just put some screengrabs from the telebox show down here and you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference, although the actual screenshots do contain the paraphernalia of combat and class-based conflict, and there’s a tendency for people to be positioned as if waiting to fight in a well-ordered fashion. The visual design on the game draws on a decade and a half’s worth of assets provided by Parker and Stone, who are also writing the script.

The framework of the game sees the player controlling a new kid arriving in South Park and journeying around to make both friends and enemies. Characters that have been discovered will be added to a social network style database, which could prompt me to indulge in the acquaintance-gathering urge that I’ve managed to avoid in the real world. It’s to be small parties and side-on combat, with classes chosen from fighter, mage, thief, cleric and Jew. This is a game in which Jews will beat up hippies for experience and loot.
